2024 was the year of big corporations and billionaires. It was also the year in which Donald Trump was elected to serve as President of the United States; Republican candidates were elected to form a majority of both the House and Senate; the Russian-Ukraine war (prompted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022) continued to escalate, causing Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II; Syrian rebels ousted Syrian dictator and former President Bashar al-Assad; the war between Israel and Hamas, which has led to the deaths of over 45,000 people in Gaza, continued to expand with widespread protest and spillover conflicts, including between Israel and Hezbollah; the Fearless Fund settlement raised questions about how a very old civil rights law enacted to protect discrimination against Black people who had been freed from slavery could be used against their descendants and to attack organizations attempting to address systemic and structural racism; and the Supreme Court expanded opportunities for companies to attack federal regulations serving to protect the public (at the cost of lower profits). But it was also the year in which union workers in the private sector saw 6 percent real wage rises for the year; the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 continued to support clean energy and climate action to an unprecedented degree; and Shohei Ohtani arguably had the most incredible year and individual game in baseball and sports history.
