Significant Events:

  • “Eviscerating the federal government and subjugating Congress; defying court orders and delegitimising judges; deporting immigrants and arresting protesters without due process; chilling free speech at universities and cultural institutions; cowing news outlets with divide-and-rule. Add a rightwing media ecosystem manufacturing consent and obeyance in advance, along with a weak and divided opposition offering feeble resistance. Join all the dots, critics say, and America is sleepwalking into authoritarianism.” Guardian
  • “On Monday, shortly after we published a story about a massive Trump-administration security breach, a reporter asked the secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, why he had shared plans about a forthcoming attack on Yemen on the Signal messaging app. He answered, “Nobody was texting war plans. And that’s all I have to say about that.” … Experts have repeatedly told us that use of a Signal chat for such sensitive discussions poses a threat to national security. As a case in point, [editor in chief of The Atlantic Jeffrey] Goldberg received information [that should have never been shared on a nonclassified group chat] on the attacks two hours before the scheduled start of the bombing of Houthi positions.” Atlantic
  • Musk Is Positioned to Profit Off Billions in New Government Contracts The boost in federal spending for SpaceX will come in part as a result of actions by President Trump and Elon Musk’s allies and employees who hold government positions. Supporters say he has the best technology. … Other government contracting experts say they remain concerned Mr. Musk is positioned to secure special favors, particularly after Mr. Trump fired officials charged with investigating ethics violations and potential conflicts of interest.” NY Times

The Trump administration has a new way to pressure companies to ditch DEI (Nathaniel Meyersohn, CNN)

Brendan Carr, the Trump-appointed chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, said the FCC will block mergers and acquisitions from media companies that promote DEI policies. … The Communications Act of 1934 requires that licensees operate in the “public interest, convenience and necessity,” and the FCC can sue to block mergers that it believes do not advance the “public interest.” … But Carr signaled that mergers between companies with DEI policies do not meet the “public interest” standard and threatened to block them.

Opinion: The Anti-D.E.I. Crusader Who Wants to Dismantle the Department of Education (Ross Douthat, NY Times) [Ed. This transcript of an interview with an influential far-right activist reflects problematic opinions held by too many (e.g., “A medium- or long-term goal of mine is to figure out how to adjust the formula of finances from the federal government to the universities in a way that puts them in an existential terror“).
